Planting New Apple Trees

Planting new apple trees is one of the most rewarding long-term investments you can make in a garden, both financially and culturally. This year, we’ve chosen to introduce a local heritage variety, strengthening the connection between the land, the climate, and the region’s agricultural traditions.

Selecting locally adapted fruit trees is not only a nod to history, but also a practical decision. These varieties have evolved to thrive in the specific conditions of their region, making them more resilient to weather fluctuations, pests, and disease. The result is often a more reliable harvest with less need for intervention, saving both time and money over the years.

Our choice fell on the Vese apple, Bohuslän’s county apple. This is a strikingly large fruit, yellow at its base with broad, vivid red stripes. Its flavor is well balanced - distinctly sweet with a refreshing acidity - making it as enjoyable fresh from the tree as it is in the kitchen.

Beyond its taste, the Vese apple is a versatile household fruit. It lends itself beautifully to traditional preserves such as applesauce, while also holding its character in baked dishes like apple cake and pies. A single mature tree can yield a generous harvest, reducing the need to buy fruit while offering opportunities for storage, preserving, and seasonal cooking.

Planting apple trees is, ultimately, an act of patience and foresight. While it takes a few years before the tree reaches full production, the long-term return is considerable: fresh, local fruit year after year, lower grocery costs, and a garden that becomes richer with time.
