A Quiet Intervention: Introducing Modern Comfort

The introduction of a toilet marked one of the first true negotiations between past and present.

Under the steady hand of carpenter Martin, a section of the original entrance floor was carefully opened. Such moments carry a particular tension in historic buildings—an awareness that each layer removed may reveal both fragility and opportunity. Nothing is ever entirely predictable.

In this case, the structure held firm. More than that, it offered a solution of its own.

Within the foundation, a single stone could be lifted with surprising ease. Behind it, a natural passage revealed itself, an opening that would allow plumbing to be introduced without forcing the building into submission. What might have required heavy intervention instead became a matter of alignment, of recognising what was already possible.

It is in these moments that the logic of the house becomes clear. Rather than imposing modern systems onto the structure, the work followed its existing rhythms, adapting where necessary, but never at the expense of integrity.

The addition of a toilet, often considered a purely functional upgrade, became something else entirely: a study in restraint. A reminder that even the most contemporary needs can be met without disrupting the quiet continuity of a place shaped by time.

Here, modernization did not overwrite the past. It found its place within it.

In order to pay homage to the house's vintage charm, we scoured the internet in search of retro-style fixtures, including faucets, a washbasin, and a toilet.

Additionally, we sought out period-appropriate light switches and electrical components to maintain the authentic aesthetic. To ensure the home's comfort and energy efficiency, we installed new insulation and secured the floorboards to prevent any unwelcome access points for mice.

The newly installed floorboards and walls received a fresh coat of linseed paint, preserving the timeless ambiance. As a delightful touch, we acquired an old door from a family who had opted for new doors in their own project. A cherished addition that reflects our commitment to preserving the house's character and history.
